CFTC Ramps Up Prediction Market Enforcement
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission issued its second warning this year to prediction market platforms, cautioning them against issuing template-style or 'cookie-cutter' self-certifications for event contracts. The advisory signals that firms have been circumventing proper event contract vetting processes, relying instead on overly broad certifications that do not meet regulatory standards.
This marks an escalation in CFTC oversight of the prediction markets sector. The regulator's repeated warnings suggest that platforms continue to treat self-certification requirements as a checkbox exercise rather than a substantive compliance obligation, prompting the agency to issue formal guidance twice within a single year.
International Disclosure and Security Enforcement Actions
Thailand's Securities and Exchange Commission filed a criminal complaint against Bitkub, a major regional exchange, and two former directors for failing to disclose a $47 million hack in 2021 filings. The regulator determined that the theft was material information that should have been reported to investors and authorities but was left out of official records.
