Circle, the issuer of USDC, has secured a New York trust charter and federal approval to establish a national trust bank. These licenses expand Circle's ability to offer fiduciary and custody services under state and federal banking law, representing a significant step toward integrating stablecoin issuers into the traditional financial regulatory framework.
The approvals signal accelerating regulatory momentum to bring major crypto platforms under established banking supervision. Circle's dual authorization reflects a shift toward treating stablecoin operators as financial institutions subject to existing oversight rather than creating entirely new regulatory categories.
U.S. Treasury Escalates Iran Sanctions Enforcement in Crypto
The U.S. Treasury Department has sanctioned multiple Iranian firms and entities for using cryptocurrency to circumvent international sanctions. Targets include Hormuz Safe, a platform accepting Bitcoin and other digital assets as payment for shipping insurance through the Strait of Hormuz, as well as Shelbit, a Dubai-based exchange allegedly linked to a $4 billion sanctions-evasion network that sent hundreds of millions in funds to major crypto exchanges including Binance.
