Domestic Legislative Push for Crypto Market Structure
Fidelity, managing $7 trillion in assets, has joined industry groups and the National Fraternal Order of Police in calling for Senate passage of the CLARITY Act, a bill designed to establish clearer regulatory frameworks for cryptocurrency markets. Multiple advocacy organizations have penned letters to Senate leadership urging support for the legislation.
However, the bill's path forward has narrowed significantly. Senate Majority Leader John Thune signaled that the CLARITY Act is unlikely to clear the chamber before the August recess, citing disagreements between Democrats and Republicans over ethics language included in the package. Democratic senators have rejected provisions they view as problematic, and analysts have downgraded the likelihood of passage.
The White House has weighed in on the stalemate, suggesting Senate Democrats should accept limitations on the administration's crypto dealings as a compromise victory, though Democrats maintain that the CLARITY Act's current restrictions remain insufficient.
