Network Shutdown Proposal and Security Rationale
Harmony developers have put forward a proposal to shut down the blockchain entirely, according to CoinDesk, attributing the decision to mounting security challenges that have become untenable to manage. The team asserts that threats from state-level actors and autonomous AI agents have raised the bar for network security beyond what the project can sustainably maintain, prompting the shift away from running an independent layer-1 blockchain.
The proposal follows recent operational difficulties, including an exploit that forced Harmony to discard approximately 109,000 transactions, as reported by Cointelegraph. This incident appears to have accelerated discussions within the team about the network's viability and security model going forward.
Strategic Pivot to Ethereum and New Ventures
Rather than abandoning the ONE token entirely, Harmony plans to migrate it to Ethereum, establishing the token as an ERC-20 asset on the largest smart contract platform. This move would leverage Ethereum's security infrastructure and liquidity while reducing Harmony's operational burden as an independent network.
