Market Cap and Dominance: Slight Rebalancing Away from Bitcoin
Total market capitalization declined to $2.634 trillion from $2.658 trillion—a 0.9% contraction over 48 hours. Bitcoin dominance compressed by 21 basis points to 58.76%, while Ethereum dominance fell 27 bps to 11.13%, indicating that money is not concentrating in the two largest assets but dispersing into mid and smaller-cap names.
24-hour volume also contracted materially, dropping from $171.4 billion to $138.7 billion, a 19.1% decline. This softer volume backdrop alongside the dominance loss suggests caution is creeping in despite overall sentiment remaining elevated, with buyers showing less conviction to chase the largest names.
DeFi Expands as Fear & Greed Holds Steady
DeFi TVL increased by $1.39 billion (1.6%) to $88.99 billion, bucking the slight decline in total market cap. This divergence is notable: while macro sentiment softened incrementally—Fear & Greed moved from 72 to 71, remaining in Greed territory—capital actually rotated into decentralized finance protocols, suggesting conviction among yield-focused participants remains intact despite the broader market pause.
The consistency of the Fear & Greed index at 71 across the last three readings (05:00, 11:00, and 17:00 UTC on Aug 22) indicates sentiment has stabilized rather than deteriorated sharply, supporting the DeFi inflow as deliberate rather than panic-driven repositioning.
