Executive Branch and Sanctions
The U.S. Treasury has broadened sanctions capabilities to cover digital assets as part of what it termed an 'Economic D-Day' campaign targeting Iran. The new authority allows sanctions against any entity operating in Iran's crypto sector, placing digital assets alongside technology, gold, aviation, and shipping as priority enforcement areas.
This expansion has immediate operational consequences. Kraken reported that sanctioned HTX wallet addresses conducted a 'dust attack'—sending small amounts of cryptocurrency from blocked accounts to Kraken users, which triggered compliance systems and locked customer access. The incident illustrates the intersection of sanctions enforcement and platform security in practice.
Regulatory Divergence on Stablecoins and Prediction Markets
A crypto trade group has formally warned regulators against expanding Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements for stablecoin peer-to-peer wallet transfers, arguing the measure would 'cripple the industry' if implemented via the GENIUS Act. The position reflects ongoing tension between regulatory compliance mandates and operational feasibility in decentralized transfer environments.
