Treasury Buybacks Drive Flight Into Risk
Bitcoin jumped approximately 6% to breach $68,000 on the heels of the US Treasury's announcement that it would more than double the size of its government debt repurchase operations beginning in September. The price surge—lifting BTC to an 11-week high near $69,000—coincided with broad-based gains across equities and crypto assets, suggesting the buyback expansion is being read by markets as a signal of improving liquidity conditions and reduced near-term fiscal stress.
Standard Chartered analyst Geoff Kendrick flagged the development as potentially meaningful for Bitcoin's cycle trajectory, pointing to the buyback expansion and resulting liquidity improvement as support for further upside toward $100,000. The $1.4 billion in liquidated short positions during the rally underscores the speed at which positioning shifted once the Treasury announcement hit.
